Hello! My name is Ayla.

I am a freelance illustrator based in Durban, South Africa. As far back as I can remember, I have always loved creating, whether that be with a pencil or a paintbrush. I am skilled in watercolour, acrylic and digital mediums, and linocut relief printing. My illustrations draw from my own experiences from childhood with a focus on the intimate - friendship, family and nature - as well as the magical and imaginative.

I am inspired by folktales, the beauty of the natural world and animals, but most of all imagination. To translate the quiet contemplation of a daydream and all the places our minds can take us into an image is my favourite challenge to tackle. In my free time I enjoy reading, painting, knitting and crocheting.

I enjoy the challenge of a new project and love to bring a vision to life! I am extremely flexible and am able to adapt my style to suit each new project and creative team. I have worked with ASI Wise to create a series of educational illustrations used to train physio therapists, and have created a number of Linocut T-shirt designs for Africa Smiles.
